The summer is the time of year when the weather turns warm, the days get longer and we try to spend as much time outdoors as possible. For sports fans, however, they spend more time indoors than out, glued to the television watching the massive amount of different sporting events that rule their summer calendar. If you're looking to place a few bets this summer, check out these top five sporting events that are taking place over the coming months and place your money on one of them to make it all that more interesting. 1. FIFA World Cup. The highlight of any football fan's sporting life is the World Cup. Taking place every 4 years since 1930 (although there was no World Cup in 1942 or 1946 due to the Second World War), the most successful team to participate is Brazil, scooping a record five titles. This year, South Africa is the host nation. The tournament begins on 11 June 2010 and is scheduled to run for a month, the final being held on 11 July. Whether you're into football betting or not, a flutter on the World Cup is always worth it, if not just so you can become enthralled, watching 32 teams battle it out over 4 weeks. 2. Test Match Cricket. Very much an Englishman's game, there are various cricket events taking place throughout the summer, but none are arguably as popular or revered as the test match variety. From 4 June 2010 through to 26 August 2010, there are 10 individual test matches taking place, according to BBC Sport. Put a bet on England to beat Pakistan in the first test match of the nPower series on 29 July then head down to Trent Bridge to watch it live. 3. Wimbledon Championships. The oldest tennis tournament in the world starts on 21 June for 2 weeks and Roger Federer will be hoping to keep the title firmly in his grip for his seventh men's single title. If you fancy something different to football betting this year, put some money on anyone of the 128 men's singles entrants or 128 women's singles entrants and see if you can scoop even a small percentage of what the winner of the both the men and women's tournaments now gets - 1,000,000 pounds according to a BBC Sport article on 20 April 2010. 4. Royal Ascot. After the Grand National in April, the next big event on the horse racing calendar is Royal Ascot, this year taking place from 15 June 2010 to 19 June 2010. Whilst Royal Ascot is known primarily as a horse racing event, it is the fact that it is such an illustrious event, with various members of the Royal family attending - including Her Majesty the Queen - that it has gained such a wide reputation and high level of popularity. 5. Golf. The term golf may seem like somewhat of a broad one when compared to some of the other events on this list, but it is because there are dozens upon dozens of individual golfing events taking place throughout the summer of 2010. There's the European Challenge Tour from 3 June to 6 June; the US Open Championship from 17 June to 20 June; the Open Championship from 15 July to 18 July and the World Golf Championship from 5 August to 8 August - and these are to name just a small selection.
